  • My name is Farwa Ahmadi and I am currently working as an INSPIRE Case Manager for NSC and Programming Chair for the Sola Foundation. I was born in Peshawar, Pakistan as a refugee, and moved to Philadelphia with my family when I was 8 years old. I received my Bachelor’s in Political Science and Master’s in Organizational Development. I have worked with refugees from diverse backgrounds in different capacities for many years. Because of my own experiences as a refugee, I have always felt very connected to this line of work. With AOPxSola, we hope to unify and empower our Afghans in Philadelphia by working collectively to provide resources, services, and opportunities for our community members. As a Director, I oversee the organization's activities, set definite goals for the organization, guide the team and provide strategic guidance, build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, and develop the team and organization.

  • Hi! My name is Sharifa Halimi and I am the president for the AOPxSola foundation. I am currently enrolled in the Mental Health and Counseling graduate program at the University of Pennsylvania and wishing to become an LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor) upon graduation. When established, I hope to utilize my skills and provide resources for the Afghan community in Philadelphia. My passion for creating a safe space and platform for the Afghans in Philadelphia stems from my upbringing in Queens, New York. Being surrounded by such a strong Afghan presence, I wanted to be able to have something similar here in Philadelphia by providing immediate resources and support, while also ensuring that the Afghan culture receives the correct representation within the city. As the President of this organization, I uphold the role of working with the director to establish both short-term and long-term goals, ensuring that these goals are met by collaborating with the team and other officials, building networking opportunities for young professional Afghans, overseeing the execution of the work we do with welcoming refugees into our city, and acting as a liaison for all integral forms of communications within and outside of the organization.

  • My name is Selli Abdali. I am currently a medical student at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. My parents immigrated to New York City from Kandahar in 1989. My mother never attended school, so receiving an education is very valuable to me. Philadelphia has been the city of opportunity for me to complete my Bachelors, Masters and now Doctorate degree. My desire to meet other Afghan-Americans in higher education led to becoming a part of the Afghan Organization of Philadelphia. In collaboration with the Sola Foundation, we hope to build a strong community not only in Philadelphia, but nationwide in providing useful resources to those in need. As VP, I work closely with our Community Outreach and Healthcare Coordinator in acquiring healthcare volunteers for outreach events. I also collaborate with the committee members and provide strategies necessary in increasing awareness of AOPxSola in the community.

  • My name is Tahmina Achekzai. I am a researcher in the Radiology Department at the University of Pennsylvania. I received a Bachelors in Physics from UC Berkeley and hope to continue my studies in graduate school. My parents moved to the United States in the 1980s and 1990s, settling in Virginia after fleeing the Afghan-Soviet War. I have worked with Afghan communities in the Bay Area through the Afghan Student Association in college, where we fundraised for humanitarian causes in Afghanistan by organizing cultural banquets, and in Virginia, where I grew up and attended many Afghan cultural and political events and attended Afghan Academy weekend school. Most recently I have helped with nation-wide advocacy campaigns for Afghanistan and helped with translation efforts at the Philadelphia International Airport. I will be handling social media accounts, developing content, and serving as AOPxSola’s media liaison. I hope to organize and serve the Afghan community through the Afghan Organization of Philadelphia in collaboration with the Sola Foundation.

  • My name is Rona Farighi and I am a PV Clinical Scientist in the areas of hematology and immunology oncology at Genentech. I received my Doctor of Pharmacy from Temple University’s School of Pharmacy. My family moved to Philadelphia as refugees when I was two months old in 1991. Before that, we lived in Islamabad where my parents settled after leaving Kabul during the Afghan-Soviet war. I’ve always had a strong desire to make an impact and contribute to helping the underserved. When I was a pharmacy student, I co-founded Al-Shifaa, a community health organization consisting of healthcare professionals and students who provide health screenings in underserved areas around the city of Philadelphia. We also collaborated with Feed Philly to provide hot meals along with providing care for the homeless. With my past experience, my goal for this position is to create a similar community who is committed to giving back. I will be in charge of community outreach, recruiting healthcare volunteers as well as setting up medical education and health screening events.

Our Programs with the Afghan Community

Since the fall of Afghanistan and the unjust occupation of the country - the horrific events that unfolded, AOPxSola was created to aid and provide outreach to the current events through the Afghan community in Philadelphia. Since August 15, 2021, we’ve held multiple fundraisers, protests, and donation drives.

  • To demand that the US government continue evacuating all Afghan allies stuck in Afghanistan and ensure their safety throughout the process. This can be done by: Extending the evacuation deadline, Securing the airport in Kabul and/or providing alternative locations for people to be evacuated from, Expanding and expediting processing of P-1, P-2, and SIVs. Removing quotas and eliminating visa restrictions and requirements.

Provide humanitarian aid to displaced and vulnerable communities in Afghanistan. Ensure the Taliban will not prohibit international aid and assistance deployed within the country.

Implement a monitoring system that will effectively empower the Afghan people to ensure aid is being distributed fairly, particularly so that every dollar is accounted for and being used for measurable outcomes.

We are also here to ask the Global community for their support, for governments to open their hearts and borders to families/ and individuals fleeing and connecting refugees to adequate resources.

We are here to honour the 241,000 innocent Afghan souls that have been lost to this senseless war in Afghanistan, the lives of 60,000+ Afghan army men who fought and sacrificed their lives for a country they never got to see in peace, and the 2000+ US military deaths as a result of the war.

We are holding Bush and every proceeding administration accountable for war crimes. The military industrial complex, the defence contractors that have profited off the war. We are demanding further investigation into the stealing of aid money that was designated for Afghanistan’s reconstruction.

To ensure that it is the voices of Afghans that are being heard in the media right now. As I speak, the Taliban are moving to censor all forms of free speech and eliminate communication to the outside world. If the Taliban have control of all communication, crimes against innocent civilians will and are already taking place. We ask the global community, especially the UN to make sure this doesn’t happen again. Civilians and journalists need their free speech protected at all cost. Afghan voices must be empowered and that western media coverage includes afghans to share their experiences and perspectives.

The international community needs to hold the Taliban regime accountable for their actions. As a terror group that has a history of heinous attacks against various ethnic groups including, the Shia community, Hazaras, women, and civil society activists, the people of Afghanistan do not trust nor accept the Taliban as a legitimate or capable government. In the absence of a legitimate government that can guarantee protection of each and every Afghan’s rights, we call upon the international community to a monitoring program of the Taliban regime, as well as an enforcement measure to punish the Taliban and their allies if they continue their campaign of horror on the Afghan people.

To ensure that the plight of Afghanistan does not fall from the global conscience. To refuse to allow the international community to disengage and forget about a crisis that is of their own doing, a crisis that has only recently erupted but has been in the making for over 20 years. We want accountability and a plan for peace that has been developed collaboratively with Afghans themselves, both in Afghanistan and in the West.

And finally, to show solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Afghanistan and in the diaspora.  We stand here for you. We stand for your peace and freedom. So as long as there is even one Afghan, our people will always have a voice.

  • In August 2021, Philadelphia International Airport became the second airport in the US to receive Afghan families that were evacuated from Afghanistan. Due to the large number of individuals/families arriving, there was a high need for interpreters. AOPxSola collaborated with the Philadelphia Department of Public Health to seek and help recruit Dari/Pashto interpreters/volunteers.

    • AOPxSola held their first donation drive in September and asked community members to donate for Afghan families that were arriving in Philadelphia. The community showed up with immense support and donated various items including; clothes, shoes, hygiene products, bags, home goods, toys, electronics, etc.

    • AOPxSola collected, organized, and transferred part of the donation to ICNA Relief to be utilized for Afghan families with resettlement agencies

    • AOPxSola collaborated with @the_impact_center and @njmuslimofficers in November to drop off donations for the Afghan families currently residing at the base in Fort Dix, New Jersey. Thousands of families at the base are dependent on donations from the community.

    • AOPxSola teamed up with @imamalimasjid for a joint effort in November to collect and organize donations for the Afghan families staying at the Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst. Donations involved winter items for families in preparation for the winter, strollers for children, essentials for pregnant women, and much more.

    • In January, AOPxSola collected monetary donations to buy winter items for families staying at a designated hotel for recently evacuated families in Philadelphia.

  • AOPxSola coordinated with Madap Sharma, a Community Resource Developer at Bethany Christian Services to conduct an URM info session on Fostering Afghan Minors. As a result, many Afghan families were able to register for training and work on becoming certified to foster Afghan minors.

  • AOPxSola presented to the education collaborative members on Wednesday, October 6th. The presentation was on key information that was important for school district and community-based organization staff to know about arriving Afghan families as these staff members work with folks to enroll their children in school and welcome them into a new learning environment.

The PPT in conjunction with the PDF provided political and historical context of Afghanistan, key cultural differences, some points about the social, economic, and educational background of families, linguistic differences (differences between Dari, Farsi, and Pashto, for example), and other relevant points.

Press & Media

Thank you for your generosity

Since Operation Welcome Allies, over 650 Afghans have been resettled by local resettlement agencies to Philadelphia. Within a short span of time, hundreds of families have been urgently resettled. Despite the great efforts by all these agencies, families still face countless issues and dilemmas as they begin the transition into their new life.

We are now raising funds to grow our work in providing resources, donations, and services for the Afghan families in Philadelphia. Please donate to ensure that the arriving evacuees and refugees get all the assistance and support they need. All the money raised will be utilized to help AOPxSola execute extra support for families. This will cover events/workshops being organized for families, school supplies/fees/uniforms, welcoming packages for recent families, scholarships/college fees, home supplies, living expenses (rent, bills, etc.), basic necessities (clothes, hygiene products, food),  and other support deemed necessary for arriving families.
